Te Whare Poutama was established to create a space as a korowai (cloak) for all people of the polytechnic community. It was created as an environment which reflects caring, sharing, understanding and love under the cloak of kaupapa Maori.
The building needed to reflect Maori concepts and values. We felt an honest structure where the structural elements where visible and easily read best reflected the kaupapa Maori concepts and values.
The material selection was important to reflect the sense of place. Local river stone is exposed in concrete panels and in gabion walls along with the canopy and decking formed from solid timbers. The space is framed by landscaping of native plants and local bluestone rocks.
